The Denver Police Foundation

Our History

The forerunner of the Denver Police Foundation, the Denver Police Officers Foundation was created in 1999 to support the families of active duty Denver Police Officers injured or killed in the line of duty, or who were facing other catastrophes.  Prior to that time, if an officer experienced a crisis, the hat would be passed to raise funds.  Founders recognized the need for a systematic approach to offering relief and established the Police Officers' Charitable Aid Program, largely supported by employee payroll deductions.

Due to a variety of factors including increasing community expectations, rising crime rates, budget reductions, rising personnel costs, continual need for recruiting and specialized training, rapidly changing equipment and technology, the need for a flexible funding option separate from the City process, and for a mechanism to leverage in-kind contributions, in 2003 the organization partnered with community leaders and in doing so, changed its name to the Denver Police Foundation and expanded its mission by adding the Public Safety Program.

Since 2003, the Foundation has promoted and supported community policing, crime prevention, and education initiatives developed by the Denver Police Department.  Foundation grants have purchased officer safety equipment, provided specialized training, encouraged professional development, recognized employee valor, promoted wellness, engaged outside consultants, and performed independent studies and program evaluation. Additionally, the Foundation has received donated goods and services on behalf of the Department. Contributions have not been used to fund programs or equipment provided for in the operating or capital budget of the Denver Police Department.
